ABOUT

Bradley Atkinson is a self-taught artist based in Echo Park, California. His work spans a range of mediums, including film photography, figurative painting, sun-printed cyanotypes, and mosaics, with a recurring focus on memory, intimacy, and fleeting moments.

The paintings often begin with 35mm film photographs taken during travel or of friends, lovers, and people close to him. These images form the soul of the work, serving as personal records of meaningful moments, relationships, and periods of his life. Through painting, the photographs are reimagined and transformed, becoming less about direct documentation and more about the instability of memory itself — how an image can hold onto a moment while also shifting, softening, or distorting over time.

His practice explores queer identity and the dynamics of the gay gaze, drawing from personal experience and the emotional charge of looking, remembering, and being seen. Each work serves as a kind of time capsule, inviting viewers to consider their own narratives while often reflecting their preconceptions and inhibitions back at them.reflecting their own preconceptions and inhibitions back at them.
